FISKER KARMA REVIEW  BLOG

By Sam Sarraf

Let’s be honest.. You’re here because you’re either an enthusiast or very curious about that exotic humming vehicle your neighbor's got.

I feel like I should first write a disclaimer here, I have no affiliation with Fisker or even Karma automotive for writing this, I’m just a happy owner of a few of them over the years and quite an enthusiast.

My story with Fisker goes back to the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9. Being a gear-head an artist myself I could not resist falling in love with these glorious pieces of automotive perfection. The gorgeous designs were successful at elegantly balancing their heritage and personality with looking strikingly modern. It's a tough task for every designer to pull off. No wonder they became instant classics.

After some research I realized both cars (and some other beauties) were the work of the brilliant Danish/American automotive designer Henrik Fisker. Of course, I naturally became a fan!

In 2011 I saw online glimpse of Henrik’s baby, the Fisker Karma!

My initial thought was: I'm sure non of these insane lines, solar roof and massive wheels will make it to production, but to my surprise pretty much everything on the concept car did! I saw the car in person for the first time at Napa Valley Film Festival in California, they had it on display for pre-orders. The car was finished in special silver paint that looked stunning. The interior was classy and timeless. The roof was a piece of art. Everyone was blown away by it. Nothing I’ve seen came even close to it. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen Ferraris, Bugattis and Paganis, but those are insane supercars, they are beautiful of course but as unnecessary as pre-peeled bananas! The Fisker looked stunning yet approachable, sporty yet comfortable, massive yet kind to baby polar bear. It got 4 doors, a trunk for things and does 50 mpg… And again..  looks like that!!

Now you might know about all the unfortunate events which led to the company’s bankruptcy blah blah blah.. So I’m not gonna talk about that here. But what I’m gonna talk about though, is my real life ownership.

Okay, I’m fully aware of those not-so-positive reviews you've seen online. Being someone who daily drives the Karma 120 miles a day I probably can tell you that some of those points are legit, but some are just stupid exaggerations designed to grab attention or just simply untrue. Everybody is trying to be a Jeremy Clarckson these days, drive a car for 15 minutes and give an “expert opinion”.

I believe for one to be able to give an honest opinion about a car they must really live with it for a while. Cars make us feel a certain way, they carry us for hours and long miles, they can be fashion statements and status symbols, some of them you beat on, some you bond with and very few become a familiar friend. I have several cars, but only one of them makes me smile every time, and it’s the Karma.

Cars are big investments, especially luxury ones. The industry is very unwelcoming to new comers. The competition is crushing and the stakes are high. For a new maker to be noticed they'd really need to deliver on many fronts, the tech, the comfort, the build quality and definitely the looks. If I’m paying over a 100K for a car it better show it, right? Anyhow.. I’m just going to tell you my honest experience daily driving 3 different Fiskers over several years

Okay, this is a touchy point for most low production vehicles. I mean we’ve all heard the horrifying early Tesla stories. My personal...

QUALITY

The Karma feels like it’s built out of a solid piece of rock, it’s very sturdy. The interior in particular got this indestructible feel...

TECH

Well, remember the Karma came out before the Tesla Model S, so the tech till then was pretty decent. However it’s quite limited in modern...

COMFORT

The Karma is a comfortable car. Think BMW 5 series or Mercedes CLS comfortable. The ride of those huge tires are surprisingly good,...

HANDLING

I don’t think anyone who drove the Fisker complained about the handling, it really surprised me for how BMW-like it was the first time I...
